Poons was a color field painter and interested in color relationships and the “optical vibration” that occurs when complementary colors are placed next to each other. Look closely at the small dots in this painting. Pick one and continue to look at it - does the color change or the dots “jump?” That’s the optical vibration Poons was interested in, and it’s caused by retinal fatigue; your eye can only look at a color so long before it makes you “see” the complementary color.
